Introduction

Resistance against neo-liberal globalisation is growing, and so is the interest in alternatives to the current economic system. In June 1999, the project Vóór de Verandering - Alternatieven voor het Neoliberalisme (Time for Change - Alternatives for Neo-liberalism) was started in the Netherlands. As far as alternatives are concerned, a lot is going on, in the Netherlands as well as in other countries.

This website offers material on solidary economy. The main characteristic of such an economy is that it is primarily aimed at the realisation of the necessary care for all, with due respect for nature and the environment. It is based on the conviction that co-operation, mutual support, and a responsible way of dealing with the environment, will yield more in terms of sustainability than competition and the boundless pursuit of profit. The search for co-operation and the bonding of strengths, with respect to individuality, is a necessary condition to improve our mutual living conditions.

In the first part, Het Project the text of Vóór de Verandering may be found, including the preliminary studies of that project, reactions on it as well as follow-up texts.

The second part, Alternatives Worldwide, offers a large number of different texts on this subject.
For easy reference, it is divided in three sections:
  • social-economic order, containing texts on the more fundamental characteristics of an alternative economy;
  • structural changes, containing texts that propose or develop ideas on a number of concrete matters such as trade, money, social security, a shrinking economy, taxes, and so forth;
  • concrete practices, what you can do yourself, what others are doing.

The third part Debate contains contributions to the discussion Towards a Solidary World Economy as was held in 2002 as part of the project Vóór de Verandering.
Also, reports are published here on discussions and meetings we participated in or organized ourselves on subjects relating to our project.

The Literatuur / Links finally is the Tool box, including a number of references to other sites, literature and possibilities to take action.

Many articles are in Dutch, but summaries in English will be provided, as well as a number of articles in different languages.
